About Kyoto

iCeMS is proud to be a part of Kyoto University, based in one of the most popular cities in Japan. Not only do we offer great research opportunities, but our location has a lot to offer as well.

The City

Kyoto is a city of rich cultural heritage with over 1,200 years of history. Many consider it as Japan’s spiritual and historical heart.

The very apparent cultural legacy coexists with major technological innovation. The city hosts corporations such as Nintendo, Kyocera and Omron. As well as this, there is also the beautiful countryside which surrounds the city.

Kyoto Life

Kyoto is a great city to live in with a balance between being a vibrant city whilst being navigable by bike and not overbearing. Compared to bigger cities like Tokyo and Osaka, it is much more affordable, allowing you to make the most of your time in Japan. It is also well located with great links to Tokyo (2 hours) as well as Kobe and Osaka (1 hour)

Cultural Kyoto

Kyoto was the capital of Japan for over 1000 years and the cultural legacy of this still remains today. As a result, it is Japan’s cultural heartland. The city provides the “typical Japanese experience” with temples, shrine gardens, geisha and traditional shops and restaurants. With an astonishing number of 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the beautiful city undoubtedly has a lot to offer.

Rural Kyoto

One of the aspects that make Kyoto so special is its proximity to beautiful landscapes. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and with three rivers running through the city, there is no question about the natural beauty that it possesses. Every spring, the city is transformed into a sea of pink due to the cherry blossoms. And, in late autumn, the city is awash with crimson and gold.
